St. Fiachra's S.N.S Student Council

Written by the Student Council

St. Fiachra’s believe that students have a very important role to play in the running of our school.

The Role of the Student Council:

  • Helps improve school life for everybody.
  • Acts as the voice of the students.
  • Acts as a channel of communication within the school organisation between pupils, school and home.
  • Encourages pupils to organise events and to represent the school in a positive way during these events.

The Election Process

Every year, students from all classes are invited to nominate themselves for a place on the Student Council. Prior to the election, candidates are asked to present their ideas in a speech to their peers. An election is held in each class and two representatives are awarded a seat on the Student Council for the duration of that academic year. The elected Student Council is required to attend regular meetings, to participate in any projects. Council members wear a special badge to ensure that they are readily identifiable as Student Council members.

Student Council Meetings

There is a student council meeting once a fortnight. Prior to the meetings, the Student Council representatives collect ideas and suggestions from all classes through our suggestion sessions for the agenda. Teacher representatives may put forward topics to discuss or upcoming events in the school which the Student Council may need to be involved in. The sixth class Student Council representatives are given the responsibility of senior roles, which are chairperson, secretary, public relations officer (pro) and treasurer. Student Council representatives report back to the student body on the outcome of our meetings. The Student Council notice board has regular updates.

Some of the ways we have improved school life include:

  • Christmas jumper art competition
  • Friendship February
  • Easter raffle
  • Easter bonnet competition
  • World Book Day
  • Creation of board game & an active zone on all yards

Through our Student Council, St. Fiachra’s SNS hopes to give our pupils a more active role in the organisation of our school and ensure they are listened to and respected for their ideas and concerns.
